Shipping an Outboard Motor in Canada

How outboard motors ship in Canada: crating, freight versus ground delivery, what drives cost, arrival inspection and Canadian address eligibility.

Outboards do not fit in a parcel box, so they move as freight — crated or palletized, priced by the space and weight they take and the distance they travel. Understanding what drives the number on a quote makes the whole purchase easier to plan.

At a glance
  • Outboards ship crated or palletized as freight; cost follows weight, crate size, distance and delivery type.
  • Standard ground delivers to a residential or commercial entry door; standard freight delivers to the address — driveway or street-side.
  • Freight does not include lift-gate service or entry-door delivery; lift-gate may be purchased where available.
  • Extra freight charges are confirmed with you before the order ships, and the invoice is corrected to the applicable cost.
  • Outboards and generators ship to Canadian addresses in line with applicable manufacturer policies and regulations.

How the motor actually travels

A motor is crated or palletized so the powerhead and gearcase are supported and the cowling is protected, then loaded with other freight. Because it is handled on a pallet rather than carried by a courier, the delivery is scheduled differently and arrives on a freight vehicle — which is why the address type and the equipment available at the far end matter so much.

What drives the freight cost

Freight is priced on the space and weight your motor occupies and how far it must go, plus what the delivery requires.

  • Crate dimensions and weight — a 2.5 HP portable and a crated V8 are different shipments.
  • Distance from Toronto and whether the destination is a metro or remote address.
  • Residential versus commercial delivery, since residential service costs more to provide.
  • Add-ons such as lift-gate service where it is available.
  • Whether the product qualifies for included shipping or is quoted separately.

Ground versus freight — the difference that surprises people

Standard ground shipping delivers to a residential or commercial entry door. Standard freight delivers to the address, whether that is a driveway or street-side, and does not include lift-gate service or delivery to an entry door. Lift-gate service may be purchased at checkout where available. If your delivery needs a lift-gate, an inside placement or help unloading, raise it when requesting a quote so the arrangement is settled before the motor moves.

If the freight cost changes

Sometimes the applicable freight cost is only confirmed once the shipment is arranged. If your order becomes subject to additional freight charges, we contact you before the order ships and you choose to pay the additional freight or cancel. Confirmation is required before the order is released for shipping or cancellation, and the invoice is corrected to reflect the applicable freight cost.

Where we ship

Products are not intended for export outside Canada: outboards and generators ship to a Canadian address, in compliance with applicable manufacturer policies and regulations. Shipping availability, freight requirements and charges vary by product and destination, so confirm your address in the quote rather than assuming a listing will reach it.

On the day it arrives

Inspect the crate before the driver leaves. Note any damage, puncture or tipping on the delivery paperwork and photograph it. Freight claims depend on damage being recorded at delivery, and a clean signature makes a hidden-damage claim very difficult.

How the order is confirmed

This website does not currently accept checkout orders, so nothing is purchased online. A quote confirms availability, the freight arrangement and payment terms before anything is finalized. For eligible purchases a 50% payment may be required to reserve an order, with the balance due according to the agreed order and shipping terms; that arrangement is confirmed with you and is not a financing program.

Questions boaters ask

Can you ship an outboard to the United States?

Outboards and generators are shipped to Canadian addresses and are not intended for export outside Canada. Contact us with your details and we will confirm what applies before anything is arranged.

Is shipping free?

Some products include free shipping, which covers standard ground or freight depending on the product. Freight requirements and applicable charges vary by product and destination, so the quote is where the freight cost is confirmed.

How long does delivery take?

Timing is confirmed with your quote once the shipment is arranged, because it depends on the destination, the carrier schedule and the freight arrangement chosen for your motor.
