What Size Outboard Do I Need?

A simple guide to choosing outboard horsepower and shaft length for your boat, with a quick sizing table for common boat types.

WHAT SIZE OUTBOARD DO I NEED?

Choosing the right outboard comes down to three things: your boat's maximum horsepower rating, its transom height and how you use the boat.

1. Check the capacity plate

Every boat built for North America carries a capacity plate showing maximum horsepower. Never exceed it. Many owners choose 75–100% of the maximum for good performance.

2. Rough sizing by boat

Canoes and inflatables: 2.5–6 HP. 12–14 ft aluminum: 9.9–25 HP. 16–18 ft fishing boats: 40–115 HP. Pontoons: 60–150 HP. 18–22 ft bowriders and bass boats: 150–250 HP. Offshore centre consoles: 200 HP and up, often twins.

3. Measure shaft length

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull: about 15" means Short, 20" Long and 25" Extra-Long. The anti-ventilation plate should sit roughly level with the hull bottom.

4. Tiller or remote?

Tiller steering is simple and ideal under about 50 HP. Larger motors usually use remote steering with a console, throttle and cables or hydraulics.

THE RIGHT MOTOR. THE RIGHT SUPPORT.
